Former One Direction singer Liam Payne has died after falling from a third-floor hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, as reported by The Associated Press and other outlets.

Payne, 31, was in Argentina after attending Niall Horan’s concert at the Movistar Arena. A preliminary autopsy revealed that he died from multiple injuries, including internal and external hemorrhaging. While a toxicology report is still pending, there are suspicions he may have been under the influence at the time. Hotel staff called for police assistance shortly before the fall, stating a guest was “overwhelmed with drugs and alcohol” and damaging the room. Payne’s family expressed their heartbreak, asking for privacy during this difficult time.

Liam Payne, born in Wolverhampton, England, rose to fame in 2010 when he joined One Direction on The X Factor. The group, which included Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik, became a global sensation. They released five albums, including the chart-topping Up All Night, featuring hits like “What Makes You Beautiful.” Payne co-wrote several of the band’s songs and pursued a solo career after One Direction disbanded in 2016.

His debut solo single, “Strip That Down,” was released in 2017, and his lone solo album, LP1, followed in 2019. Payne’s music output slowed in recent years, but he recently returned in March with the single “Teardrops,” which he called a “new beginning.” Fans continue to mourn his loss, holding vigils and singing One Direction songs outside the Buenos Aires hotel where the tragedy occurred.
