Quincy Jones, the legendary producer, composer, and multi-Grammy-winning music icon, passed away at the age of 91 on November 3, 2024, at his home in Bel Air, Los Angeles, surrounded by loved ones. Renowned for his profound influence on music, Jones’s career spanned over seven decades, during which he shaped the sounds of artists like Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, and, most famously, Michael Jackson.
Born on March 14, 1933, in Chicago, Illinois, Jones’s musical journey began with a deep-seated love for jazz, leading him to work with legends and eventually become one himself. His collaborations with Michael Jackson marked a high point in his career, producing the iconic albums Off the Wall, Thriller, and Bad. Notably, Thriller became the best-selling album of all time, transforming Jackson into an international pop sensation and solidifying Jones’s reputation as a visionary producer.
Beyond music, Jones made significant contributions to film and television. He produced the Oscar-nominated film The Color Purple and the beloved TV series The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. His influence also extended to social causes and mentoring younger artists, bridging generations through music and media. In recognition of his achievements, Jones earned 28 Grammy Awards, including a Grammy Legend Award, and became one of the few to achieve an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony (EGOT).
Jones is survived by his seven children: Jolie, Rachel, Martina, Quincy III, Kidada, Rashida, and Kenya. In a statement, his family expressed their sadness at his passing but celebrated his remarkable life and legacy. Tributes from industry giants poured in, with musician Nile Rodgers and actress Goldie Hawn among those remembering his transformative impact and cherished friendship.
