The phenomenon of non-English language songs breaking into the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 highlights the increasing globalization of music and the diverse tastes of American listeners. Over the decades, several non-English tracks have not only charted but also resonated deeply with wide audiences, marking significant moments in the music industry.
One of the earliest notable entries was “Sukiyaki” by Kyu Sakamoto, which topped the chart in 1963. This Japanese song remains one of the few Asian language songs to achieve this feat. Years later, the Italian song “Dominique” by The Singing Nun also reached the number one spot in 1963, showcasing the broad appeal of European artists in the American market.
In more recent years, the rise of Latin music has been unmistakable. Hits like “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee featuring Justin Bieber, which not only reached number one in 2017 but also remained there for a record-tying 16 weeks, exemplify this trend. “Despacito” was pivotal in bringing reggaeton and Latin pop to the forefront of the mainstream music scene.
K-pop has also made its mark with BTS’s “Dynamite,” which debuted at number one in 2020, becoming the first song by a Korean act to achieve this milestone. This English-language track by a Korean group symbolizes the global influence of K-pop.
Other significant entries include “La Bamba” by Los Lobos, a Spanish song that topped the charts in 1987, demonstrating the enduring appeal of Latin rock. More recently, “Un Dia (One Day)” by J Balvin, Dua Lipa, Bad Bunny, and Tainy, and “Taki Taki” by DJ Snake featuring Selena Gomez, Ozuna, and Cardi B, have also made their way into the top 10, further cementing the place of multilingual collaborations in American music charts.
These tracks showcase not just a passing trend but a broader shift towards a more inclusive and diverse musical landscape in the U.S., where the language barrier is increasingly seen as inconsequential to achieving massive commercial success.
