Gospel legend Marvin Sapp has ventured into new musical territory with his EP titled “If I Were an R&B Singer,” which was released on Valentine’s Day, 2025. This project represents a significant departure for Sapp, known primarily for his gospel music, as it explores the R&B genre through a collection of love songs. The EP includes tracks like “Listen,” “Moment or Lifetime,” “Free Fallin” (co-written by his son), and “Through My Pain,” showcasing his deep and resonant vocal style within the R&B context.

Produced by Kolten Perrine, known for his work on tracks like “Peru” by Fireboy DML and Ed Sheeran, the EP blends traditional R&B sensibilities with Sapp’s gospel roots to create songs that maintain lyrical integrity and musical depth. The project features live musicians and aims to honor God while exploring themes of love and emotional expression. Notably, Sapp has stated that this foray into R&B is a one-time venture, reaffirming his commitment to gospel music as his primary genre.

Sapp’s exploration of R&B is described as a way to express the musical influences that have touched him over the years, including artists like Peabo Bryson and Teddy Pendergrass. Despite this being a unique project, Sapp emphasizes that future recordings will return to his gospel roots, making “If I Were an R&B Singer” a unique and standalone expression of his musical versatility
