Huey Lewis says he won’t “give up” recording music despite hearing loss

Despite facing profound hearing loss due to Ménière’s disease, Huey Lewis remains resolute in his commitment to music and creativity.

Diagnosed with Ménière’s disease in 2018, Lewis, 74, has experienced complete bilateral hearing loss, rendering him unable to hear music—a devastating blow for the Grammy-winning artist. While a cochlear implant has improved his ability to understand speech, it does not restore his capacity to enjoy or perform music. Reflecting on this loss, Lewis shared, “The worst part is that means it’s bad enough not to be able to perform and sing and play, but it’s really bad not to even be able to enjoy music” .

Despite these challenges, Lewis refuses to abandon his musical endeavors. He continues to engage in creative projects, such as the Broadway musical The Heart of Rock and Roll, which features songs from Huey Lewis and the News. Although the show concluded its Broadway run in June 2024, plans are underway for a national tour in 2027 and a potential London production .

Additionally, Lewis is exploring new ventures, including developing a television show with producer Aaron Kaplan and comedian Jimmy Kimmel. While details remain limited, this project signifies Lewis’s ongoing dedication to storytelling and entertainment .

In his personal life, Lewis finds solace in nature, particularly through fly fishing, which he describes as a way to connect with the outdoors and find peace. He acknowledges the difficulties of his condition but maintains a perspective of gratitude, stating, “I’m still a lucky guy,” emphasizing the importance of family support and adapting to life’s changes
