Grammys: Janelle Monáe Catching Flack From Michael Jackson Fans Following Quincy Jones Tribute Performance

Janelle Monáe is universally adored, and her performances are typically spot-on. However, her recent impersonation of Michael Jackson during a tribute to the late Quincy Jones did not resonate well on social media last night. Monáe, a gifted artist with 10 Grammy nominations, attempted Michael Jackson’s hit “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough,” produced by Jones. The tribute included performances by Stevie Wonder, Cynthia Erivo, and others.

Quincy Jones, a recipient of 28 Grammy Awards, last won in 2018 for Best Music Film for the documentary Quincy.

Will Smith, who collaborated with Jones on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, returned to the awards scene to introduce this segment, following his previous controversy.

Monáe captured Michael Jackson’s iconic style, wearing a glittering tuxedo, complete with sparkling socks and penny loafers, and performed the moonwalk perfectly, exciting the audience. She then removed her jacket to reveal a t-shirt that read “I [heart] QJ,” in tribute to Jones, who passed away on November 3, 2024, at age 91. She threw the shirt into the crowd, where Taylor Swift caught it and put it on.

Despite her efforts, some viewers felt Monáe’s performance fell short.

One displeased viewer expressed on X: “Janelle Monae’s performance was disappointing and disrespectful. To honor such a legendary figure inadequately after previous controversies is unacceptable. She needs to refine her choreography and vocals with experts like Cheryl Porter and Paula.”
