Billy Joel, the iconic “Piano Man,” was notably absent from the premiere of his two-part documentary, Billy Joel: And So It Goes, at the Tribeca Festival on June 4, 2025. This absence follows his recent diagnosis with normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), a rare brain condition characterized by an accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain’s ventricles, leading to symptoms such as hearing, vision, and balance issues .

In a statement shared on his Instagram, Joel expressed his regret over missing the event and canceling upcoming performances, stating, “I’m sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience.” He emphasized his commitment to recovery, noting that he is undergoing specific physical therapy and has been advised to refrain from performing during this period .

Despite the challenges, Joel maintains a positive outlook. He humorously remarked, “Getting old sucks, but it’s preferable to getting cremated,” conveying his resilience and determination to return to the stage . Close friend Howard Stern also shared that Joel is “not dying” and remains upbeat, focusing on his health and future performances. 

Joel’s family has been a pillar of support during this time. His wife, Alexis, expressed gratitude for the outpouring of love and support, stating, “Bill is beloved by so many, and to us, he is a father and husband who is at the center of our world.” His daughter, Alexa Ray Joel, praised her father’s strength, describing him as “the strongest and most resilient man” she knows .

Billy Joel: And So It Goes offers an intimate look into Joel’s life and career, featuring rare archival footage and candid interviews. The documentary delves into his journey from Long Island roots to international stardom, highlighting personal and professional milestones . The film is set to premiere on HBO and HBO Max later this summer.
