Major record companies, including Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, and Warner Music Group, have filed a lawsuit against AI music generators Suno and Udio, accusing them of mass copyright infringement. The companies allege that these AI platforms have been training their models on copyrighted works without proper authorization, resulting in the creation of music that closely resembles original songs by established artists (Music Business Worldwide) (Gearnews.com).

The lawsuit points out that both Suno and Udio’s AI models have generated music that mimics the style, melodies, and even lyrics of popular tracks, raising significant concerns about intellectual property rights. For instance, there have been numerous instances where Udio produced songs containing lyrics and melodies strikingly similar to well-known hits by artists like Coldplay, The Beatles, and ABBA (Music Business Worldwide) (THE DECODER).

Ed Newton-Rex, a former lead audio developer at Stability AI, has been a vocal critic of this practice, arguing that using copyrighted music for training AI models without permission constitutes copyright infringement and undermines the rights and livelihoods of original content creators (THE DECODER). Despite these concerns, companies like Suno continue to operate, leveraging the defense that there should be a “fair use” exemption for AI training data, a stance that is yet to be definitively ruled on by courts (Music Business Worldwide).

This legal battle underscores the ongoing tension between technological innovation in AI and the protection of intellectual property rights in the music industry, highlighting the need for clear regulations and licensing agreements to ensure fair compensation for artists while fostering technological advancement.
