Sérgio Mendes, the iconic Brazilian musician known for bringing bossa nova to the global stage, passed away on September 5, 2024, at the age of 83. Mendes had been battling complications from long COVID, which exacerbated his respiratory issues. He passed away peacefully at his home in Los Angeles.

Mendes was Known for bringing Brazilian music, especially bossa nova, to the global stage, Mendes’s influence spanned over six decades. His signature song, “Mas Que Nada,” originally written by Jorge Ben Jor, became a global hit in 1966 with his group Brasil ’66 and remains one of the most iconic tracks in Brazilian music. The song was later revived in 2006 in collaboration with the Black Eyed Peas, introducing his work to a new generation.

Throughout his career, Mendes won three Grammy Awards and produced numerous albums, with hits like “Never Gonna Let You Go” and “The Look of Love.” Mendes was celebrated not only for his musical talent but also for his ability to fuse samba, jazz, pop, and funk, making Brazilian music accessible and beloved worldwide.

He is survived by his wife and musical partner, Gracinha Leporace, and their children.​
