The year 2005 proved to be an exceptional one on the Official Singles Chart, with a lineup of 100 songs turning 20 that truly highlights its significance.
The Pussycat Dolls burst onto the scene with two consecutive Number 1 hits: the electrifying “Don’t Cha,” featuring Busta Rhymes, and the more tender “Stickwitu.” McFly and Oasis each notched up two Number 1s as well, with McFly hitting the top with “All About You” and “I’ll Be OK,” and Oasis with “Lyla” and “The Importance of Being Idle.” However, it was Elvis Presley who stole the show. Thanks to a major reissue campaign, Elvis saw three of his classic singles — “Jailhouse Rock,” “One Night/I Got Stung,” and “It’s Now or Never” — all reach Number 1, increasing his tally of chart-toppers to 21, the highest to this day.
Tony Christie featuring Peter Kay with “(Is This the Way to) Amarillo” and James Blunt with “You’re Beautiful” claimed the longest stints at Number 1 in 2005, dominating the charts for seven and five weeks respectively. James Blunt’s track was from his hit debut album “Back to Bedlam,” which also led the Official Albums Chart for seven weeks.
Mariah Carey made a notable comeback, placing three singles from her album “The Emancipation of Mimi” in the Top 10. “It’s Like That” peaked at Number 4, “We Belong Together” at Number 2, and “Get Your Number/Shake It Off” at Number 8, with “Don’t Forget About Us” reaching Number 11.
The chart was lively with other pop actions as well. Girls Aloud landed three Top 10 hits: “Long Hot Summer,” “Biology,” and “See The Day.” Rachel Stevens had two Top 10 singles, “Negotiate with Love” and “So Good,” plus another peaking at Number 12. Charlotte Church transitioned from classical to pop successfully with Top 10 hits “Crazy Chick” and “Call My Name” from her album “Tissues and Issues.”
The year concluded with monumental Number 1s from Arctic Monkeys with “I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor” and Madonna’s “Hung Up,” a thrilling ABBA-sampling track.
